Poisoning Our Way to Health

Who decided that daily, feed-through wormers and paste wormers made of poison are a good idea? In the past 100 years we have been taught to believe that we can eat poison and it will be good for us. Can we feed our animals poison and not harm them as well?

This approaches represents fear-based thinking: fear of germs and parasites; fear of failing our animal companions. Fears taught to us by the pharmaceutical companies and the Big Five multi-national corporations that make most of our pet foods. I prefer to focus on the goal of health: supporting the immune system, cleansing the organs of elimination with regular detoxification programs and feeding my animals what Mother Nature fed them.

Many parasites such as strongyles and ascarids are developing resistance to ivermectin. The traditional approach has become to add in more potent and varied poisons in to kill the evil creatures. Instead, why don’t we look at the underlying reason that an animal with parasites is susceptible in the first place?

Why is it that with 10 horses out in the pasture, only one develops parasites? They are eating the same diet, surrounded by the same parasites all day long. What is the difference? The susceptible horse is the one with the compromised immune system - he is a hospitable host. His digestive tract may not have healthy gut flora to fight off the parasites, or his liver may not be able to produce enough T-cells or enzymes to support a strong immune response. Do we help this problem by adding poisons to the mix?

It is healthier and more cost effective to help the horse be an inhospitable host for parasites. I regularly give my horses and dogs herbs and clays that flush and support the liver and kidneys. We use an herbal worming program to provide a more alkaline pH and an electromagnetic field that repels parasites. Using probiotics and herbs, our horses and dogs have had zero fecal counts for over 10 years. We have not seen colic, allergies, abscesses or other serious non-trauma health issues.

Our animal partners survived for tens of thousands of years without parasite prevention programs. They lived in balance with the parasites that nature provided for a reason. Parasites are natures way of culling the weak and carrying away waste. They rarely go where they are not needed.

Anywhere in your life where you regularly reach for toxic “preventatives” try looking for ways to help the body (yours, or your animal’s) stay healthy instead. Support the body’s natural healing mechanisms by giving it the nutrition it needs to heal itself.
