On
March 1, 2006 my mare Lady
gave birth to a colt during
morning hours everything
look alright the colt was
nursing in the morning,
but we didn't witness the
birth. We didn't
know when the colt had
started nursing. On
Sunday I notice the colt favoring
his right hind leg, so
I went outside to see what
was wrong, and it seem
okay, but the following
day the hock was swollen
in the joint. I called
the Vet and she was going
to be in the area on Friday
and would stop by to check
the colt. Friday
she showed up and exam
the colt and thought the
colt did not nurse soon enough
and receive the colostrum
from the mare. She
drew blood to do a
igg count, which she called
me in four hours to let
me know that Tramp's igg
count was 0 - this meant
he had supposedly received
no colostrum or immune
coverage from his mother.
She suggest to call
a Equine Hospital to get treatment
for the colt. I called,
and the Vet wanted
to do a blood transfusion
and do surgery on the hock
to drain and pump antibiotics
to clear the infection
in the hock. Estimated
cost $3000.00 - $5000.00.
Knowing
I couldn't afford that
type of money and there
was no guaranty that that
he would be a 100%.
So on Saturday I called
Kay and ask her if she
could come out to check
Tramp. She came out
on Sunday.
We put tramp on a course
of Dynamite's SOD (Super
Oxide Dismutase) to help
build his immune system
mixed in with Dyna-Pro
probiotic. He also
began receiving Amazon
Herbs: Warrior, Illumination
and Sumacazon. We
also used liquid Recovazon
on his hock in the morning
and Miracle Clay at night
to reduce the inflammation
and swelling in the joint.
By Wednesday the swelling
had reduced noticeably
and he was using the leg.
That weekend, Tramp was
running in the pasture
with only a slight hesitation
when using his right leg.
Within two weeks he was
completely sound and has
continued to gain weight
and strength.
Note from Kay -
My personal take is that
this new mother accidentally
stepped on or kicked her
new foal in the right hock.
I don't understand the
igg test - if there was
swelling due to an infection
that would indicate that
the body could fight the
infection - which implies
a working immune system.
So the SOD was "just
in case" and the rest
was to strengthen his system
and lower the pain and
inflammation. Momma
and son are doing wonderfully
now!
